CHAPTER 21

Ineedn’t have worried about our fish supply dwindling. While I rested to allow my side and back to heal the next day, Bayne went fishing again after I reminded him multiple times to monitor his breathing, because I didn’t want to dive in to rescue him again.

He speared an octopus and two types of flounder that I didn’t know the names of, then brought them back to roast for dinner. Bayne had been delighted to discover that cooked fish tasted far superior to eating it raw, and took every opportunity to roast his food now that he was on land. I watched him, a curiosity niggling in the back of my mind.

Isn’t it cannibalistic for you to eat fish?

Bayne’s eyebrow rose as he contemplated my question. Are you a cannibal for eating chickens or cows?

I’m not a cow or a chicken.

Nor am I a fish.

Not anymore, but you had a tail before.

Chickens and cows have legs. You have legs. Does that make you a chicken?

The side of my mouth quirked, and my abdomen trembled in a laugh.

A siren is not the same as a fish, he continued. We are much better than fish, even though we both have tails. Humans have legs, just like cows or chickens, but a beautiful woman is much better than any cow.

I hastily looked down at my hands and fought the blush threatening to rise in my cheeks. No one had ever deemed me beautiful before. It was difficult to think of Bayne as a siren anymore. He was just…Bayne, the handsome man who’d saved my life and who cared about me. He exuded kindness and was always considerate of me and my needs.

He rotated the fish on the spit, and I watched as the flames cast a glowing light over his features. I wouldn’t have believed that there was a man in the world who was capable of making me laugh and feel valued, and was good-looking enough that even I was in danger of swooning, and yet here Bayne was, fulfilling all those requirements and more. If I ever was to marry someone, I’d like it to be someone like Bayne.

He wasn’t intimidated by me either, a most refreshing turn from my usual interactions. Could it be that he genuinely saw me as someone to admire just as much as I admired him?

Bayne insisted on sleeping in the sand outside the shelter and letting me have the flimsy bamboo supports all to myself. While his actions were likely guided by chivalry, there was also an element of pure common sense. The shelter struggled to support just me, and Bayne was much larger and heavier. It would be crushed under his weight, and if both of us tried to squeeze in, it would spell disaster.
